The ENERGY STAR® program was established in 1992 by EPA to provide simple, credible, and unbiased information that consumers and businesses rely on to make well-informed decisions about energy efficiency. Since 2009, EPA and the Department of Energy have been working together to implement the program.
Since 1992, ENERGY STAR® and its partners helped American families and businesses save more than 4 trillion kilowatt-hours of electricity and achieve over 3.5 billion metric tons of greenhouse gas reductions, equivalent to the annual emissions of more than 750 million cars. In 2018 alone, ENERGY STAR® and its partners helped Americans avoid $35 billion in energy costs.
EPA and DOE determine the criteria for energy efficiency in a wide range of products. The products that meet these criteria can display ENERGY STAR® symbol. Moreover, every year the best-in-class products that meet a tighter set of criteria are recognized as that year’s ENERGY STAR® Most Efficient products. Read on below for details of these two symbols.
What is the significance of an ENERGY STAR® symbol on a washer?
Additionally, the water consumption of the washer is also taken into account. For this calculation, the per-wash water consumption is divided by the capacity of the washer. ENERGY STAR® certified washers have a smaller ratio as they use less water for the same capacity. If you're not using an ENERGY STAR® certified washer, you're wasting 6 gallons of water every time you wash.
If every clothes washer purchased in the U.S. was ENERGY STAR certified, we could save more than $3.3 billion each year and prevent more than 19 billion pounds of annual greenhouse gas emissions, equal to the emissions from more than 1.8 million vehicles.

What does “ENERGY STAR® Most Efficient” mean?
Products that meet a tighter set of criteria are recognized as the Most Efficient of ENERGY STAR® for that year.
In addition to being considerably more efficient in their energy and water consumption, washers that receive the ENERGY STAR® Most Efficient certification are also tested for cleaning performance. Energy efficient washers that pass a threshold of "Maximum Load Cleaning Score" receive the ENERGY STAR® Most Efficient certification.
