What does ENERGY STAR® and ENERGY STAR® Most Efficient mean for dishwashers?

What do ENERGY STAR® and ENERGY STAR® Most Efficient mean for dishwashers?
What do ENERGY STAR® and ENERGY STAR® Most Efficient mean for dishwashers?

The ENERGY STAR® program was established in 1992 by EPA to provide simple, credible, and unbiased information that consumers and businesses rely on to make well-informed decisions about energy efficiency. Since 2009, EPA and the Department of Energy have been working together to implement the program.

Since 1992, ENERGY STAR® and its partners helped American families and businesses save more than 4 trillion kilowatt-hours of electricity and achieve over 3.5 billion metric tons of greenhouse gas reductions, equivalent to the annual emissions of more than 750 million cars. In 2018 alone, ENERGY STAR® and its partners helped Americans avoid $35 billion in energy costs.

EPA and DOE determine the criteria for energy efficiency in a wide range of products. The products that meet these criteria can display ENERGY STAR® symbol. Moreover, every year the best-in-class products that meet a tighter set of criteria are recognized as that year’s ENERGY STAR® Most Efficient products. Read on below for details of these two symbols.

What is the significance of an ENERGY STAR® symbol on a dishwasher?

ENERGY STAR® certified dishwashers include several innovations that reduce energy and water consumption and improve performance.

A modern and energy efficient dishwasher generally has the following features that help save water and energy:

  • Turbidity sensor which test how dirty the dishes are during the wash and adjust the cycle accordingly to achieve optimum cleaning with minimum water and energy use.
  • Better water filtration technologies help clean the wash water more efficiently and increase the efficiency of detergent and water.
  • More efficient jets use less energy to spray detergent and water on the dishes.
  • Improved dish rack designs that maximize cleaning of dishes.

Thanks to these innovations, an ENERGY STAR® certified dishwasher can cut your utility bills by about $111 per year. This means, in 12 years (the average lifetime of a dishwasher) you can save about $1.300 or more in energy and water if you use an ENERGY STAR® certified dishwasher.

The current criteria for dishwashers to receive the ENERGY STAR® symbol is to

  • Consume less than 270 kWh/year and 3.5 gallons per cycle

Thanks to the water-saving techniques in an energy efficient dishwasher, you can save money and use less water. This helps divert less water from our rivers, bays, and estuaries and keeps the environment healthy. It can also reduce the water and wastewater treatment costs and the amount of energy used to treat, pump, and heat water. This also lowers the energy demand and helps prevent air pollution.

Beko's innovative features and energy saving silent motors allow all Beko dishwashers to be ENERGY STAR® certified, so you can’t go wrong with a Beko.

What does “ENERGY STAR® Most Efficient” mean?

Desktop Image Container
Mobile Image Container
ENERGY STAR® Most Efficient is a distinction by EPA to recognize products that deliver cutting edge energy efficiency along with the latest in technological innovation. In another words, ENERGY STAR® Most Efficient products not only care for your wallet and the environment but also excel in their performance.

Products that meet a tighter set of criteria are awarded with the ENERGY STAR® Most Efficient symbol. As it stands today, the criteria for dishwashers are:

  1. The product must be ENERGY STAR® certified.
  2. The product must consume less than 240 kWh/year and 3.2 gallons per cycle.
  3. The product must have a cleaning index of at least 70.

This means, ENERGY STAR® Most Efficient dishwashers not only consume much less energy than ENERGY STAR® certified dishwashers but are also proven to excel in their performance. It does not get better than this!

Cleaning index:

For Soil-sensing Dishwashers, three tests are conducted with heavily soiled, medium soiled, and lightly soiled loads of dishes (plates, bowls, glasses, and utensils). The dishes are placed in the dishwasher for the test load alternating between clean and soiled dishes. Every particle left on any dish after the completed cycle is measured and counted. The size and number of particles are input into a cleaning index formula. The Cleaning Index must be 70 or higher to be declared Most Efficient.

All Beko dishwashers* meet and exceed the Most Efficient criteria and are recognized as the Most Efficient of ENERGY STAR® 2020. Click here to see ENERGY STAR® Most Efficient 2020 Beko dishwashers.
