How to prevent dishes from getting scratched in the dishwasher?

Certain types of dishes are susceptible to being scratched in the dishwasher.

Kitchen utensils that contain or are made of aluminium can be corroded in the dishwasher. Some delicate glassware, chinaware and porcelain items are also not dishwasher-safe.

Check the cleaning instructions on such items to see if they’re dishwasher safe. For other items, see if one of the following will solve the problem.

Check the water hardness level and use dishwasher salt accordingly

Dishwasher salt helps your appliance’s internal softener unit reduce the hardness of tap water. If your water supply is soft (<5dH), don’t use salt as it may scratch or corrode glassware.

Follow the instructions in your user manual to measure your tap water’s hardness level. If you’re having trouble finding your manual, download it here using your product’s model number.

Avoid spilling dishwasher salt inside the appliance

Dishwasher salt reservoirs contain water, and this water may overflow when you fill the reservoir with salt. Salt may also spill inside the appliance while refilling the salt reservoir. Salt inside the dishwasher tub may scratch glassware.

To minimize salt spills, use the funnel provided with your Beko dishwasher when pouring salt into the reservoir, and be sure to wipe away any overflowing water or salt granules. Close the reservoir lid tightly after refilling it.

Run a prewash programme or the shortest programme to wash away any salt that may have been spilled inside the appliance. Salt granules under the lid will dissolve during prewash and may cause the lid to loosen. Check the lid at the end of the programme and close it firmly.

Make sure the water hardness setting is appropriate

Hard water might also cause dishes to become scratched. Your dishwasher has a water hardness setting which you need to adjust according to the hardness of your tap water.

Follow the instructions in your user manual to determine the correct setting. If you’re having trouble finding your manual, download it here using your product’s model number.

Beko dishwashers with Auto GlassShield® have sensors which determine the hardness of your tap water and adjust the water hardness setting automatically.

Make sure the appliance is loaded properly

You may be loading your dishes incorrectly or overloading your dishwasher. Make sure all your dishes are tilted properly and that they’re not touching each other or the moving parts of the dishwasher. See our guide on how to load a dishwasher  for more information.

If you don’t load your dishes properly, water sprayed during the wash cycle might cause dishes to strike against, scratch or even break each other.

Avoid using too much detergent

Using too much detergent doesn’t necessarily mean that your dishes will be cleaned better. If you overload the dispenser, leftover detergent may scratch the finish on your dishes. Always take the level markings into account, and don’t exceed them.

Avoid using inappropriate detergent and other products

Be sure to use detergents, rinse aid and salt which are specifically for dishwashers. Don’t use dish washing liquid, hand soap, bleach, vinegar or any other chemicals under any circumstances as these products reduce your dishwasher’s performance, cause metal pieces to rust, and may even shorten the lifespan of your appliance.
