How to read the new washing machine energy label?

Energy labels for washing machines and washer dryers are changing. After 1 March 2021, all energy ratings will be listed from A to G rather than A+, A++, and A+++.

The new labels aim to reward energy-efficient appliances while implementing stricter eco-design requirements and improved environmental performance. The new regulations cover not only energy efficiency but also energy consumption in a way that consumers can relate to more easily.

The energy efficiency rating of washing machines is based on the energy consumption of new “Eco 40- 60” programme. The “Eco 40-60” programme is recommended for normally-soiled, durable cotton and linen laundry with care labels declaring the wash temperature between 40 °C and 60 °C.

Here is what the new washing machine energy label looks like and what the symbols and numbers stand for:

  1. QR code (New)
  2. Scale of energy efficiency classes (A-G)
  3. Energy efficiency class
  4. Weighted energy consumption in kWh per 100 cycles (New)
For the calculation of consumption values, quarter, half and full-load values are taken into consideration.
  5. Rated capacity in kg
  6. Weighted water consumption in liters per cycle (New)
For the calculation of consumption values, quarter, half and full-load values are taken into consideration.
  7. Duration of the “Eco 40-60” programme at rated capacity (New)
The ‘Eco 40-60’ programme is taken as the norm in determining energy consumption, water consumption, residual dampness, noise, programme duration, in addition to washing, spinning and rinsing efficiency.
  8. Spin efficiency class
  9. Noise level during spin cycle in dBA*** and noise emission class (New)
Sound power level reference to 1 pW
