How to fix a washing machine that won’t start?

How to fix a washing machine that won’t start?

If your washing machine won’t drain, your laundry won’t be cleaned properly. There are several reasons for your washing machine not to drain. Please see if one of the following will solve the problem.

See if the pump filter is dirty or clogged

The most probable cause is a clogged pump filter. The pump filter should be cleaned every three months or when it’s clogged. This filter is installed to catch foreign objects like buttons or coins, and to prevent these items from entering the drain hose. It’s located at the bottom right-hand corner of your washing machine.

To clean the pump filter, open the cover and pull the drain hose towards you. Please note that there may be some water in the pump. Put a bowl at the end of the hose and have towels ready for when you pull the filter out. Remove the cap at the end of the small hose and let the water drain. Then turn the filter anti-clockwise to remove it. Wash it with warm water under the tap.

Inspect the filter cavity to see if anything like dirt, coins or buttons are stuck in it. Give it a wipe with a damp cloth and reattach the debris filter and the cap of the drain hose. Put the hose back inside and close the cover.

See if the drain hose is bent or clogged

The hose between your machine and the drain shouldn’t be bent or clogged. Check the hose, and unclog or straighten it if necessary. Otherwise, the water may not be removed from the drum completely.

Make sure wastewater is not running back into the drum

If there are no problems in the pump filter or the drain hose, the drained water might be returning to the drum. To avoid wastewater being kicked back into the machine, do the following:

  • Secure the drain hose in place at the rear of the machine and above the connection to the machine with the clip. Make sure the drain hose isn’t removed from its clip.
  • Make sure that the drain hose is connected to the waste outlet at least 40 cm and at most 100 cm above ground level.
  • Check that the hose is pushed about 15cm into the drain outlet. If it’s too long, cut it short.
