How to tell if your tumble dryer vent is clogged?

How can I tell if my tumble dryer’s vent is clogged?
How can I tell if my tumble dryer’s vent is clogged?

If you own a vented dryer, then your appliance will need to be installed near an external vent. The hot, damp air produced in the appliance is removed through this vent.

The vent should be clear of blockages for safety and for good drying performance. The following signs may mean that the dryer vent is clogged.

See if the drying time has increased

The most common sign of a clogged dryer vent is longer drying times. Check your user manual and see if the operation is taking longer than the time stated. If you’re having trouble finding your manual, download it here using your product’s model number. If the dryer vent is blocked or restricted, your appliance will take longer to dry clothes.

See if the appliance or the clothes are hotter than usual

If your tumble dryer and/or your laundry is hotter than usual, this may mean that the vent can’t remove the hot air properly. In this case, the heat will stay in your dryer and make your laundry and the appliance warmer than normal.

Check for steam inside the dryer

The hot and damp air inside the tumble dryer will produce steam. A clear dryer vent will remove this steam. Check the door, the display and the inside of your appliance for steam or condensation after a cycle. If you see any, check your dryer vent for clogging or blockages.

Check for water leaks

If the damp air isn’t removed from the appliance, it may leave puddles around and behind your tumble dryer and/or inside the vent. If you find puddles around your appliance or vent, check the vent for clogging or blockages

Check the lint filter for lint and fibre

Lint and fibres released by the laundry are collected in the lint filter. If the dryer vent is blocked, there will be little to no air movement reaching the load. If you see no lint or less lint than usual in the lint filter, your dryer vent may be clogged.
